Wood Columns
Wood columns are available though American Porch for your new construction or remodel project. Wooden columns are made-to-order and must be ordered via phone/email. We do not have an online purchase option because wood architectural columns are custom-made for your specific project. Ordering is easy, and we will do the legwork for you. Just send us your plans, drawings, or a description of your requirements. We will do the take-offs, send you drawings for your approval or alteration, and get to work making your authentic wooden columns. Unlike our synthetic columns which are made using capital-intensive molds, wood columns can be made with limitless design variations or alterations to fit your project and architectural style.

Compare the Orders of Columns
The Greek, Tuscan, Roman, Ionic, and Corinthian columns shown above are the most common architectural styles for our wood column line. Because we have so much design latitude with wood, and because they are custom made to each project, we can produce about any design style of wood column you need.
Wood Options for Architectural Columns
For exterior wood columns, we recommend using cedar for its rot resistance, and 10-year limited warranty. Pine columns are also available, with a 1-year limited warranty. For interior wood columns, we offer hardwoods that are more conducive to indoor use. Our most popular stain grade species are red oak, mahogany, cherry, maple, alder, and walnut. Paint grade woods are typically finger-jointed pine or poplar.
Column Sizes Available in Wood
We are able to provide authentic columns in a very wide range of sizes. Diameters as small as 6″ are typically used as interior columns, such as a cabinet column for a kitchen island. On the other end of the spectrum, we can make up to a massive 36″ diameter column shaft, which uses a column base with a full 4 foot wide square plinth footprint. See the chart below for standard column size availability. Keep in mind that we have a great deal of flexibility in the design of columns made of wood, so if you don’t see what you need, just let us know and we can give you a quote.

Prime and Asphalt Finish Options Available for Exterior Wood Columns
You have the option to have us factory prime the columns, as well as coat the interior of the column with asphalt wood sealer. This is necessary for exterior wood columns before they are exposed to the weather. We offer this service from the factory, so you don’t need to do it on the jobsite or purchase those materials. Calculated Safe Column Load Capacities
The sample columns tested supported loads at least four times the calculated values to the left prior to failure. The load was applied concentrically through the axis of the column. Loads shown are valid only if there is uniform contact between the full area of column ends and the cap and base units. Loads are provided for your convenience only and are not exact values. Consult a structural engineer for the most accurate load estimates.
