Specifications

Rafter tails are useful on both new construction, and as replacements for rotted exposed rafter tails.  These decorative rafter tails are non functioning, or faux rafter tails.  Sometimes called dummy rafter tails, they are made of high density Polyurethane foam so they look and feel much like wood but will not rot.

High density cast foam Polyurethane material will not rot or crack, even when highly exposed to the weather.  That along with the fact that it looks and feels like wood, make polyurethane the ideal material for use in decorative rafter tails.  PVC or vinyl eve details look and feel like plastic because, well, they are.  We think you’ll find our poly tails to be the right choice for your pergola, eve, or porch.

Describing dimensions on a rafter tail can be a little tricky.  Because the exposed rafter tails project out from the wall under the eves, the standard “length, width, height” dimensions can be confusing.  We instead use width, height, and projection to describe the rafter tail dimensions, with the “projection” being how far it projects out from the wall or pergola.

Attach with a Polyurethane adhesive such as PL Premium adhesive.  You can also finish nail if you prefer.  Fill any nail holes or marks with a automotive body filler, sand smooth, and paint.

What is a Rafter Tail?

In the literal sense, it is the end of the rafter that is exposed to the exterior as an architectural detail element.  Many architects use exposed rafter ends to beautify a home, even when the actual structure of the house doesn’t require it or need it.  These “dummy” rafter tail ends are used to create that style of architecture in a cost efficient and low maintenance manner.
